Malaysia opens first eco-mall

Developers describe Malaysia’s new Space u8 in Persiaran Pasak Bumi, Taman Bukit Jelutong as the nation’s first ‘eco-mall’.

The mall worth RM250 million (US$78 million) measures 182,880 sqm.

Real estate company Mainstay Holdings, the developer of Space u8, has utilised used tires for balancing the mall’s temperature, thus, minimising air-conditioning usage. Open ventilation and solar panels were also used.

“Besides air-conditioning, natural wind from outside can also enter the supermarket and giant fans are used to balance the temperature inside the building,” said Raja Mohd Azmi Raja Razali, chairman of Mainstay Holdings.

The eco-mall houses 250 shops, a seven-screen cineplex, a bowling centre run, karaoke facility, Space Wok food court, 1300 cars parking capacity and can accommodate 1400 people.

The mall, marketed with the tagline “Meet You There”, is planning to organise 150 events next year including wedding occasions and a flea market.
