US salad chain enters Singapore

Pennsylvania-based fresh salad chain Saladworks is destined for Singapore.

Saladworks has reached an agreement with Singapore’s Amos Lee to open 15 outlets, the first to be opened this year, with two others to follow in2013.

Singapore’s technological infrastructure, geographical accessibility, probusiness climate and large English-speaking population were among the attractions to Saladworks to venture into the city state.

“We feel that we’re in a solid position for international growth. We’re excited to start that growth within Singapore,” John Scardapane, chairman and CEO of Saladworks, said.

Saladworks was developed by John Scardapane in 1986. The concept sees salads made to order, chopped on-location and assembled in front of customer’s eyes.

Cynics said a salad-only business would not survive so Scardapane added sandwiches to the menu, dropping them after a year after salad sales proved the naysayers wrong.

In the US, Saladworks operates in 12 states.

This year, it plans to enter 20 new locations including the Middle East and the UK.
