Dairy Queen to expand in China

US brand Dairy Queen plots further expansion in China as it plans to open at least 1000 outlets by 2016.

The Minnesota-based chain opened its 500th outlet in China this month at Hu Dong district in Shanghai.

“With the world’s fastest growing major economy, China continues to be a tremendous expansion market for the Dairy Queen system and we attribute that in large part to strong alliances with our development partners here, including Shanghai Shida Catering,” said John Gainor, president and CEO of International Dairy Queen.

Last year, Dairy Queen opened a total of 271 stores, 131 of which were located in China. It entered China in 1991 with its first store in Beijing.

Dairy Queen offers treats like desserts, hot dogs, hamburgers and beverages. Owned by investment company Berkshire Hathaway, Dairy Queen was founded back in 1940.
