Chicken Rice chain eyes growth

The Chicken Rice Shop, a quick service restaurant chain based in Malaysia, plans to renovate its outlets in existing markets in Malaysia and Singapore and expand into Indonesia.

The Chicken Rice Shop has 58 outlets in Malaysia and three in Singapore. The refurbishment will cost The Chicken Rice Shop a total of RM60 million (US$20 million) to be implemented within the next three to five years.

“The priority will be our main outlets, which we aim to refurbish by this year. Our aim is to continuously improve the ambience of our restaurants to enhance our customers’ dining experience. We’re expecting a 15 per cent growth in our business this year,” said CEO Wong Kah Lin.

The Chicken Rice Shop outlet in Sunway Pyramid shopping centre in Malaysia will be the first to get the new look. Apart from renovation, The Chicken Rice Shop also plans to open five to eight new outlets in smaller towns this year.

The chain, which serves signature offerings including roasted, steamed, braised and honey barbecued chicken, is also looking for opportunities in Indonesia.

To ensure customers always see new dishes on the menu, The Chicken Rice Shop introduces a new dish every two to three months which according to Lin contributes 20 per cent to the restaurant’s sales growth. Its latest addition to the menu is the dish called Ayam Muhibah which is a blend of taste and flavor of Malaysia’s different ethnic heritage.

The Chicken Rice Shop whose tagline is ‘Chicken Rice….and More’, also spans Taiwan and the Philippines.
