Muji’s plans for China

Muji, the edgy Japanese retailer which sells household and consumer goods, will step up its expansion in China with more store openings in the pipeline.

Muji, known for its minimalist design and lack of branding, plans to take its number of stores in China from current 41 to 100 by 2013.

President Matsui Tadamitsu considers China the world’s most vibrant market, hence, the expansion.

“We expect to have a fast development in the future 10 years in China. Japan has only 100 million people but the Chinese population is 1.3 billion,” he said.

Between 25 and 30 stores will open before the end of this year.

Muji currently has 372 stores in Japan and 163 overseas.
