India’s Max rebrands Spar stores

Following its franchise agreement with France-based Auchan Group, Max Hypermarkets is undergoing a rebranding of its Spar stores.

Max has started the changeover in Bengaluru and Mangalore.

The first phase of the rebranding project in Karnataka is timed to coincide with the onset of the Dussehra festival, while the stores in the north and west will be rebranded to bring in the Diwali season.

“We have plans to incorporate Auchan’s international best practices across our business and into our way of working as the model evolves and as we roll out Auchan hypermarkets in India. This will enable us to give our customers the best of quality, value and service,” said Viney Singh, MD of Max Hypermarkets.

Max Hypermarkets and Auchan plan to open 12-15 new stores in a year across India.

Founded in 2004, Max Hypermarkets, part of Dubai-based Landmark Group, currently operates 13 hypermarkets across India.

Spar stores were formed through a joint venture between Max Hypermarkets and Netherlands-based retailer Spar in 2007. The partnership will come to an end in December 2012 after the two decided not to renew the contract.
