FamilyMart in massive Japan expansion

Convenience store chain FamilyMart will expand massively in its home market with an additional 3000 stores planned over the next three years.

Company officials said the additional stores are targeted at locations where the chain has a low presence. It plans to increase the store count in each prefecture to more than 100.

FamilyMart’s rapid expansion in metropolitan areas such as Osaka, Tokyo and Nagoya saw its total store count reach 9320 in January. Abroad, it has 12,651 stores, most of which are located in Asia.

Meanwhile, FamilyMart’s local operator in Thailand plans to quadruple its store count from 792 to 3000 during the next four years.
