Asos to enter China

British online fashion retailer Asos is to tackle the Chinese market.

Asos will open a Chinese-language website in October as it aims for £1 billion (US$1.6 billion) of sales by 2015. Along with China, Asos will also add Russia to its growing list of international markets.

“Our international roll out continues and our 1 billion pounds sales ambition for the group is firmly in our sights,” said CEO Nick Robertson.

“We want to be truly global. We can’t be truly global unless we’re in China, and this is the start of that journey,” he added.

The online retailer is upbeat on outlook as it booked an 11 per cent profit increase in the six months to February, with revenue up 33 per cent. International sales saw a growth of 39 per cent, with the US leading the way.

“Momentum is strong, and we remain positive in our outlook for 2012/13 as we continue our journey to becoming the number one online fashion destination for twenty-somethings, globally,” said Robertson.

Asos, which has 6 million customers, said it maintains customer interest by constantly reviewing products, adding around 2000 lines per week and ensuring it continued to “lead fashion trends and keep product ranges relevant”.
