Starbucks eyes Myanmar

Myanmar could be the next new market for the US coffee giant Starbucks.

CEO Howard Schultz, in his visit to Thailand to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Starbucks in the country and the opening of Asia’s first Starbucks community store in Bangkok, said the company is targeting Myanmar as future market.

“Within the next couple of years, I’d say,” said Schultz of plans to open there.

Besides entering new markets, Starbucks also plans to expand its footprint across Asia. It is aiming to increase its network in China from the current 850 to 1500 by 2015.

“We’ve built the kind of business that has garnered a fair amount of trust from multiple constituencies in China,” said Schultz. “I think the market is large enough for many people, and I think we have a unique opportunity to maintain our leadership position.”

Starbucks also plans doubling its network in Thailand to 320 within five years.

India, where it has 12 stores, will also get more.

The coffee giant boasts a network of 19,000 outlets in 62 countries.
