McDonald’s plans massive China expansion

Fast food chain McDonald’s plans to accelerate its expansion in China as demand for quick meals there booms.

The Big Mac maker is planning to take its store count in the mainland from 300 to 2000 this year. Its McCafe coffee shops will be expanded by 45 per cent to 750, it says.

McDonald’s will hire 75,000 new staff in addition to the current workforce of 90,000 to help facilitate the expansion.

The additional staff will see McDonald’s increasing its employees in the world’s second largest economy by 83 per cent.

China’s fast food market attracts players to expand due to the consumers’ rising income and busy lifestyle which fuels growth for fast casual dining. Euromonitor is expecting fast food industry in China to rise by 14 per cent to 115.1 billion yuan (US$18.7 billion) this year.
