Uniqlo debuts in Indonesia

Japanese apparel brand Uniqlo is to open its first store in Indonesia tomorrow, June 22.

The store is in the new Lotte Shopping Avenue shopping complex, currently under development in the Kuningan district of Jakarta.

With a sales area of almost 2680 sqm, the megastore is one of Uniqlo’s largest in Southeast Asia and will carry the brand’s full product lineup.

To celebrate the opening, Uniqlo will offer limited time discounts on some key products, such as Uniqlo T-shirts (UT), Denim, and AIRism innerwear. The first 1000 visitors to the store on opening day will also receive a limited edition tote bag.

“As the most populous nation in Southeast Asia, and with a strong and growing economy, Indonesia is a key market,” said Tadashi Yanai, chairman, president and CEO of Fast Retailing, the parent company of Uniqlo.

“With the opening of our first store, we aim to speed up our expansion in Southeast Asia,” he added.

Uniqlo’s business in Indonesia (PT Fast Retailing Indonesia) takes the form of a joint venture with Mitsubishi Corporation, under which of the 1 billion yen paid-in capital with Fast Retailing contributed 75 per cent and Mitsubishi Corporation 25 per cent.

The business is overseen by Fast Retailing group EVP Naoki Otoma.

Uniqlo plans to accelerate store openings across Asia, which it believes offers tremendous growth opportunities.

At the end of May, Uniqlo operated 1254 stores in 13 markets, including 23 stores in the four Southeast Asian countries of Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines.
