Canadian e-commerce player enters India

Canada-based e-commerce player Shopify has entered India’s e-commerce market space in partnership with Singapore communication company SingTel.

Shopify aims to reach out to new entrepreneurs who want to build their business online, established businesses that want to improve their stores with a stronger focus on branding, and bricks-and-mortar retailers who want to take their products online.

Entrepreneurs will also be able to accept secure credit card payments for their goods and services.

“We built Shopify to allow anyone with a product or a service to easily create beautiful and highly scalable online stores, at an affordable price,” said Shopify’s chief platform officer Harley Finkelstein.

SingTel said it is excited by the tremendous growth opportunities in the e-commerce market. By 2015, 35 per cent of internet users in the Asia Pacific region will make purchases online, and 30 per cent of these transactions will be performed on a mobile device.

Shopify has operations in more than 100 countries and claims to power over 50,000 online stores.
