Jay Mart to ramp up Myanmar rollout

Jay Mart is to open 20 new stores in Myanmar this year on top of three stores it has already opened in Yangon.

The move follows the awarding of telecom licenses by the Myanmar government to Telenor of Norway and Ooredoo of Qatar to operate mobile service in the country.

Jaymart says it will spend 150 million baht (US$4.8 million) on the new stores.

The retailer has a goal to sell 20 million mobile handsets this year, up from the 15 million it sold last year.

And as more and more consumers there opt for smartphones, it is expecting to sell 40 million mobile handsets by 2015.

Thai mobile operators Advances Info Service, True Move and DTAC expect to record 10 million 3G subscribers each this year.

Jaymart says that would likely boost the sales of mobile handsets, particularly smartphones.
