Haagen Dazs to open in Sri Lanka

US company General Mills is taking its premium ice cream brand Haagen Dazs to Sri Lanka.

General Mills believes there is an opportunity for the brand to grow in Sri Lanka.

“The premium ice cream market may not be as big as India, but there is a luxury segment in Sri Lanka,” said Arindam Haldar, director of premium food at General Mills India.

Haagen Dazs has been present in Asian countries but not yet in the SAARC region.

While aware of the competition, General Mills is confident Haagen Dazs has an edge over its competitors.

“Our business model is different from the rest of the premium ice cream brands, as we are in the luxury gourmet space,” said Haldar.

Haagen Dazs is expanding in some markets like China and India, but it is also exiting unprofitable markets like Philippines and Japan.
