Mall anchors world’s largest building

China is now a home to the world’s largest building.

At 1.7 million sqm, New World Global Center in Chengdu is considered the world’s largest standalone structure. The building is 20 times the size of Sydney’s Opera House and three times the size of Washington’s Pentagon Building.

New World Global Center houses offices, conference rooms, a 14-screen Imax cinema, an Olympic-sized ice skating rink, two five-star hotels, water park, artificial beach, restaurants and one of China’s largest shopping malls.

The building also features an ‘artificial sun’ that shines 24 hours a day to provide comfortable 24-seven temperature.

The 18-storey glass and steel structure transforms Chengdu into ‘world class modern city of idyllic beauty’.

It took three years to construct the building which opened on July 1.

New World Global Center sits across another massive building, the Contemporary Art Centre designed by Zaha Hadid Architects.

Chengdu, with more than 14 million inhabitants, has been predicted to become one of the world’s fastest growing cities.
