Borders re-enters Singapore

Popular Holdings is closing its lifestyle concept bookstore Prologue at Ion Orchard on August 25, however, it says, it remains committed to the book industry.

As the new owner of bookstore chain Borders, Popular Holdings will be re-opening the US brand in Jurong by the end of the year.

“Though the book business is often labelled a sunset industry, retail and distribution combined are one of Popular’s strongest core businesses. We expect to gain both mindshare and market share among Singapore’s book-lovers with Borders,” said Popular Holdings CEO Chou Cheng Ngok.

Popular Holdings is a veteran in bookstore business, with an extensive retail network of nearly 156 stores throughout Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong.

Borders closed its last store in Singapore in September 2011 due to the bankruptcy of its former parent company.
