Delhi Duty Free plans downtown shops

India’s Delhi Duty Free Services is to open downtown duty-free shops to further boost sales.

The downtown duty-free shops are reported to be limited to overseas travellers, embassy officials and expatriates.

“The downtown duty-free concept is an idea whose time has come in India. This concept will allow customers to shop within a specified time period at the duty-free shops present within the city limits,” said COO Arun Barathi of Delhi Duty Free.

“The concept itself may not be an immediate success but we would like to start small. There are regulatory glitches and we will be seeking guidance on the same,” he said.

Delhi Duty Free Services is a joint venture between Delhi International Airport Ltd, Indian Duty Free Services and Aer Rianta International. It operates duty-free shops at the Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport.
