Gmarket aims to become top mobile retailer

Korean retailer Gmarket, owned by eBay Korea, is expecting mobile commerce to drive its business growth.

With Korea currently has more than 30 million smartphone users, it has no doubt that mobile will become a common commerce platform.

Gmarket launched a mobile shopping site the first time in 2009, which it says is growing at 30 per cent annually.

It also launched “virtual stores” which allow shoppers to scan the photos of the products displayed on a screen, make purchases online and have it delivered to their homes.

Gmarket lures shoppers through promotions as well as new services. It has partnered with Kakao Talk to send instant messages to users for orders and shipping.

“Mobile shopping is an emerging business in the retail industry as it has affected the whole paradigm of online shopping,” said a company’s official.

“We will continue efforts to lure customers with unique services.”
