India now the world’s third largest Internet nation

Web use is rising dramatically in India which has surpassed Japan as the world’s third largest Internet population, behind the US and China.

According to digital measurement and analytics firm comScore, India’s Internet users have increased by 31 per cent with 17.6 million added in the past year.

The country now has 73.9 million home and work Internet users.

With an enormous Internet audience, the market poses huge opportunity for online businesses.

comScore says that 60 per cent of Indian web users visit online retail sites dominated by retailers including Myntra, Flipkart and Jabong.

The top subcategories within retail include apparel, computer and electronics.

Indians are also embracing mobile and tablet devices more and more to surf the web. Web traffic through mobile and tablet has accelerated 14.2 per cent, says comScore.

“Consumers have already adopted multiple platforms and devices – now it’s the businesses who need to follow if they desire a unified, platform-agnostic view of consumer behaviour,” said comScore.

Indians also increasingly spend time on social networks such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest and Tumblr.
