Shang Xia heads to Paris

Chinese brand Shang Xia has opened its first overseas store in Paris.

The Hermes-backed brand has opened a 70 sqm store at 8 Rue de Sèvres, next to an Hermès store. The store is the brand’s third globally after Shanghai which opened in 2010 and Beijing which opened in 2012.

Japanese architect Kengo Kuma has designed the retail space which features Chinese cultural elements. It offers clothing, jewellery, furniture and household objects handmade using fine traditional crafts methods.

Shang Xia, which means “up and down” was established in 2008 with a goal to showcase Chinese design and artisanal craftsmanship.

Artistic director and CEO Jiang Qiong Er says they have no further expansion plan for now as they want to grow slowly.

“The challenge for me will be widening my workforce and finding people who accept to be trained,” she said.
