Uniqlo expands Bangladesh footprint

Japanese apparel brand Uniqlo is to add two new stores in Bangladesh.

The new stores will both open in Dhaka on October 4 and 5, through a collaboration with Grameen Healthcare Trust of the Grameen Bank Group.

The latest openings follow its first two stores in Bangladesh’s capital in July.

In the short space of four months, the stores – called Grameen Uniqlo – have attracted a popular following.

“This is the next step towards the vision of a nationwide chain of stores, and we will be increasing our product offering and aim to attract a strong fan base right across Bangladesh,” said Grameen Uniqlo COO Tadahiro Yamaguchi.

Grameen Uniqlo produces the collection in Bangladesh using locally sourced materials, providing highly practical items – made by locals, for locals.

Profits are re-invested in the business within Bangladesh, to grow the network of stores. The initiative is one aspect of Fast Retailing’s long-term commitment to address poverty, hygiene, the environment, and educational and gender inequality in the rapidly developing nation.

Grameen Uniqlo began with door-to-door sales in farming villages – offering affordable, quality clothing to people living below the poverty line.
