Prada opens Tokyo mega store

Italian luxury brand Prada has opened a new store in Tokyo’s Ginza district.

Designed by architect Roberto Baciocchi, the new space occupies about 991 sqm on three levels offering women’s and men’s leather goods, accessories, footwear and ready-to-wear collections.

Its external façade, which pays tribute to artist Carlos Cruz-Diez, rises to third-floor height. The two large store windows flanking the entrance are set into a black granite base topped by a structure of golden and polished steel narrow panels, which creates a striking kinetic effect, both in the day and at nigh time.

The ground floor, which offers women’s and men’s leather goods, is defined by a series of areas characterised by the classic black-and-white chequered marble floor – that is a legacy of Prada’s historic identity, walls covered in mirrors and green fabric and furniture finished with a narrow polished steel trim and black marble drawers.

A black Marquina marble staircase, framed by bronzed metal panels and a glass lift link the three floors.

The first floor displays women’s collections. Footwear is presented in niches lined with pale green canvas, while ready-to-wear is featured in Perspex display cases enhanced by the light coming from transparent skylights. Perspex and polished steel tables in geometric shapes and green velvet sofas complete the furnishing.

The top floor, dedicated to men’s collections, has a very masculine flair. Thin stave ebony flooring, green canvas ceiling with a polished steel trim and the walls – either encaustic-treated in orange or of lined metal – give the area a distinctive character. Polished-steel and glass furniture highlights the products and the arrangements in display counters, together with cotton leather seats.

Prada has 14 stores in Tokyo, half of which are shops-in-shops within department stores. The brand is also present in 10 other Japanese cities.
