Singapore IT, electrical and furniture retailer, Courts Asia, has broken ground for its first store in Indonesia.
The retailer has partnered with Sinar Mas Land to open its first big-box store in Kota Harapan Indah in Bekasi, expected to open in the second quarter of 2014.
“Indonesia is a very exciting market. It’s a consumer-driven economy and it is one of the most populous countries in the world,” said Court Asia CEO Terence Donald O’Connor.
“More importantly, the consumer segment has seen a very strong emergence as there are about 135 million middle-class consumers,” he said.
Courts Asia says it is looking to open 10 to 12 stores in Indonesia in five years.
With its roots as a furniture retailer from the UK, the Courts brand was established in Singapore and Malaysia in 1974 and 1987 respectively. It operates more than 70 stores across both markets.
