Popcorn franchise eyes Asia

Singapore-based gourmet popcorn chain Cornery is seeking opportunities to expand in Asia.

Cornery, owned by Aramidth International, described as a “popcorn gallery”, was founded on the idea of changing perceptions of popcorn. It has identified four markets in Asia for franchise development – Indonesia, Thailand, India and China.

The Asian expansion is part of Aramidth International’s target to open 12 new stores from the current three over the next three years.

“In most parts of Asia, popcorn consumption is confined to movie theatres. Due in no small part to the establishment of Cornery – the popcorn gallery, a new culture of consuming popcorn outside of movie theatres has emerged in Singapore,” said Aramidth International CEO Suyanto Agus.

“Indonesia, Thailand, India and China are bereft of quality popcorn options; consequently the popcorn culture is still undeveloped. A Cornery franchisee would have the opportunity to become a real first mover in these markets,” he added.

Cornery features an open concept kitchen – see it, hear it, smell it and taste it. Customers are invited to sample different flavours before they decide which ones to buy.

Aramidth International, which started with a small production plant in 2008, is Singapore’s largest supplier of popcorn products to foodservice operators. It opened its first international franchise store in Malaysia in May 2013. Since then, one further store has been opened in Malaysia and two more are slated to open in the next six months.
