Google plans Indian shopping festival

Google’s ‘Great Online Shopping Festival’ (GSOF) aims to hit 20 million online shoppers in India.

GSOF was created by Google India in 2012 in collaboration with a number of Indian online shopping portals to promote their sales by giving heavy discounts for 72 hours.

The festival, which runs from December 11 to December 13, will see e-commerce players such as online travel sites, auto companies, telecom companies, fashion labels, health and well-being companies to banking financial services offer the best deal to customers across India.

“Buyers can find discounts ranging from 20 per cent to up to 80 per cent in many categories. Up to 60 per cent off on luxury watches, 20 per cent on air tickets on domestic routes, up to 50 per cent on speakers, headphones and men’s accessories,” said Google India industry director e-commerce Nitin Bawankule.

With more than 200 million Internet users, India’s online shopping market is expected to become a US$16 billion industry by 2017.
