Ikea to open Seoul store

Swedish furniture retailer Ikea plans to open a store in Godeok-dong, Seoul.

Media reports say Ikea is in discussion to open a 13,000 sqm store within Godeok Commercial Zone. Another store is planned for Goyang City in the northwest of Seoul.

“Unlike in Japan and China, Ikea is accelerating its move into the Korean market. Most in the furniture industry somehow expected Ikea to open a store in Godeok-dong,” said an official of Hanssem, Korea’s largest furniture maker.

“It seems that Ikea plans to open around 10 stores in Korea given how fast they’re buying up land across the country,” said one industry insider.
