Gap sets Taiwan opening date

US retailer Gap is to open its first store in Taiwan on March 8.

The three-level store will be located in Taipei’s Xinyi District and offer men’s, women’s, children’s and infants’ clothing.

A second store is slated to open by the end this month.

Gap is the latest foreign retailer to open in Taiwan, following its rivals Uniqlo of Japan and Zara of Spain.

The Taiwan expansion is part of its strategy to grow its overseas business to offset the slowing growth at home.

In China, where it currently has 80 stores, Gap says it will open 25 new Gap stores and up to 10 Gap Outlet stores this year.

Recently, it also opened its first Old Navy store in China, in Shanghai with another four to be added in the remaining months of the year.
