Watsons hits milestone

Hong Kong beauty and health care retailer AS Watsons Group has reached a milestone with the opening of its 4000th Watsons store.

The company says its global expansion plan is to exceed 13,000 stores by 2015.

“This year alone we plan to open 1200 new stores amongst which 700 will be under the Watsons brand. This represents an average of over three new stores a day throughout the year,” said AS Watsons Group MD Dominic Lai.

AS Watsons Group, which has over 11,000 stores across all its brands, is a unit of multinational conglomerate Hutchison Whampoa which plans to list the beauty and health care retailer in Hong Kong and mainland China which could value it at more than $20 billion.

“Watsons can have two listing locations as it has a relatively big market cap. Hong Kong will definitely be one of them. I hope we can do it within this year,” said Li Ka-shing, who controls Hutchison Whampoa.
