Lawson signs Philippine JV

Japanese convenience chain Lawson has partnered with grocer Puregold Price Club to develop a c-store chain in the Philippines.

Lawson and Puregold will own 30 and 70 per cent of the joint venture, respectively.

The JV plans to open 2000 stores in the long term across the Philippines, Lawson’s third market in Southeast Asia after Indonesia, where it has 60 stores and Thailand, where it has 31. Lawson also has nearly 12,000 stores in Japan and more than 400 in China.

“The Philippines is very strong in consumption. I am very interested in entering it,” said Lawson chairman Takeshi Niinami.

The Philippines’ convenience chain market includes players 7-Eleven, Ministop and FamilyMart, which entered the country in 2012 through JV with Ayala Group and Rustan’s Group.
