Thai restaurant keen on overseas expansion

Thai restaurant chain Bar B Q Plaza is to expand into new markets including Myanmar, Vietnam and the Philippines.

Bar B Q Plaza is a Mongolian and Japanese style barbeque restaurant where customers can experience self-grilling.

The company is currently in talks with potential partners to set up joint ventures in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam.

“Our overseas expansion policy will be conducted through joint ventures in order to benefit from local partners’ expertise while also leaving us with control over the operation and our branding,” Chataya Supanpong, assistant MD of The Barbecue Plaza Co.

Bar B Q Plaza began expanding abroad in 2005 when through a JV partner, it opened in Malaysia. Indonesia followed in 2012.

While keen on expanding abroad, Bar B Q Plaza remains bullish about the domestic market, saying it will increase its outlet count there from 98 to 125 by 2017.

“This is because we have seen good signs of an increasing spending trend for Thai people in the latter part of the year,” Supanpong said.
