Amazon ups ante in India

American e-commerce giant Amazon is beefing up its competitiveness in India’s online retail market.

Amazon will open five new fulfillment centres in Delhi, Chennai, Jaipur, Tauru and Ahmedabad, adding to its existing ones in Mumbai and Bangalore.

The Chennai centre is already operational while the remaining four will begin operation next month.

The new centres will enable many more SMEs expand their online business and benefit online shoppers through faster delivery and greater availability.

Its local competitors Flipkart and Snapdeal have also recently opened fulfillment centres to ensure 24 hours delivery.

Online players are boosting their presence and infrastructure as they vie for a larger share of India’s e-tailing market, which according to Technopak, will hit $32 billion by 2020.
