Spar, Max Hypermarkets renew partnership

Dutch retailer Spar International and Max Hypermarkets have forged a new partnership for India.

The new partnership builds on the previous successful partnership between the two companies which saw the launch of Spar branded hypermarkets across six states in India.

The new agreement will result in 13 of those stores reconverting to the Spar brand in the coming months and a further 20 stores opening nationwide over the next five years.

Over 30 Spar hypermarkets will be operational across India by 2019, with sales exceeding €300 million ($400.9 million), they said.

“Our new partnership with Max Hypermarkets reaffirms the suitability of the Spar business model to the retail market in India,” said Gordon Campbell, MD, Spar International.

“Our previous presence in the market provides a strong foundation to grow the brand in the years ahead and we look forward to working closely with Max Hypermarkets to bring quality fresh foods, low price and a convenient shopping environment to consumers in India.”

Prior to this, Max has ended its two-year partnership with France’ Auchan Groupe.
