World’s largest duty free shop opens

The world’s largest duty-free shop has opened its doors in Sanya City, Hainan Province, China.

China Duty Free Group opened the store on Monday, the Haitang Bay International Shopping Complex, which spans 72,000 sqm over three floors and comprises duty-free shop, restaurants, entertainment and cultural venues.

The duty-free shop houses around 300 luxury brands across 21 categories including jewellery, cosmetics, perfume and leather goods.

China International Travel Service Group (CITS), parent of China Duty Free Group, has invested 5 billion yuan (about $814 million) to build the complex.

The Chinese government plans to boost the tourism in Hainan by relaxing duty free policies, offering tax refunds after departure and exempting tourists from 26 countries and regions from visa requirements.
