Lawson to acquire upscale supermarket

Japanese convenience chain Lawson will buy upscale supermarket chain Seijo Ishii for 55 billion yen ($502.8 million), including debt.

Seijo Ishii has 120 supermarkets across Japan.

Lawson, with around 12,000 convenience stores, said the acquisition will help it expand its customer base and consequently boost the company’s sales.

The two parties are expected to seal the deal next month.
