Indian food chain to expand

India’s Spencer’s Retail plans to open up to 15 stores a year until 2020.

The chain, part of the Kolkata-basd RPG Group, currently runs 126 stores – 33 of them large format – in 40 Indian cities, employing 4500 staff.

The chain is described as ‘multi-format, food-first’ retailer but it also sells apparel, fashion, electronics, lifestyle products, music and books.

This calendar year it opened nine new stores, last year 11.

“Our plan is to open 10-15 stores every year with stress on the hyper format,” the company’s head of retail Shashwat Goenka said in a media interview.

Spencer’s largest store opened in Kolkata in 2008, a 6700qm hypermarket located in the South City Mall.

The company sells a wide range of ‘Spencer’s Smart Choice’ house brand products spanning traditional FMCG categories like juices, noodles, cookies, honey and household products.
