Indian cafe chain plans major rollout

Indian chain Barista Coffee is set to open 550 cafes over the next five years.

Barista Coffee was established by Italy’s Lavazza, but old to local company Carnation Hospitality last July. It currently operates 198 cafes and plans to reach 750.

According to a report in India’s Economic Times, Carnation is targeting $50 million in annual sales by 2020.

The majority of the new stores will be company owned, the balance franchised.

“The company-owned and -operated Barista coffee shops will focus on high streets, malls and pop-up outlets and kiosks while the franchisee owned will be opened primarily across the Middle East and Southeast Asia,” said Sanjay Chhabra, director at Carnation Hospitality, in an interview.

Carnation is a wholly-owned subsidiary of packaging giant Rollatainers which also owns the Maple Foods business, supplying the foodservice sector, and a chain of casual dining restaurants Kylin.

It also plans to roll out US burger chain Wendy’s in India, along with UK celebrity chef Jamie Oliver’s restaurant brand Jamie’s Italian.
