Metro China revamps pricing structure

Hypermarket operator Metro China has rolled out a new pricing scheme and a series of initiatives to enhance customer services in all the 81 stores across the country, starting from today, January 8.

Under the slogan of “Buying more pay less”, Metro’s new pricing scheme will grant additional five per cent discount on purchasing three of the same item and up to 25 per cent off on buying six selected items.

Meanwhile, the new services including ‘Worry-Free Shopping’, ‘Worry-Free Metro Mail’ and ‘Smiling Ambassadors competition’ are designed to greatly improve customer service level in all stores.

“Our new pricing scheme and customer service initiatives are important steps in making our stores more competitive and attractive to our customers,” said Jeroen de Groot, president of Metro China.

“Through these moves we will not only accelerate the sales growth in the stores, but more importantly also to meet the expectations of our customers, especially small and independent businesses, and make Metro a competitive alternative to the wholesale markets in China.”

To ensure attractive shelf prices, Metro China has started extensive price monitoring on over 80,000 items in the cities covered by Metro’s store network.

Metro says it will promote the new pricing scheme through multiple channels such as Metro Mails, official website, its official WeChat account and in store signage.

The new services to boost customer satisfaction which start today are:

Worry-Free Shopping – To be piloted in Shanghai before rolling out to more cities, this will allow customers to return goods unconditionally within 90 days of purchase. (Some pre-defined categories like ultra-fresh foods and digital products are not included in this service).

Worry-Free Repairing –  Customers will be able to rent free backup products from Metro stores in case their purchased product needs repair. This applies to goods such as TVs, microwave ovens, printers, telephones and fax machines.

Metro Mail – The wholesaler’s bi-weekly mail catalogue, offering top-selling products at attractive prices. Under the new Worry-Free Metro Mail service, customers can enjoy free delivery of products promoted in the Mail but out-of-stock in store.

Smiling Ambassadors Competition – In all Metro stores customers can nominate staff for awards recognising excellent customer service.
