Wellcome Hong Kong fights food safety slur

Supermarket chain Wellcome Hong Kong has been subject to an inaccurate social media campaign accusing it of responsibility for a customer contracting Hepatitis.

So prevalent have the messages been circulating online and via instant messaging, the company issued a clarification Wednesday, posted on its Facebook page, assuring customers the reports were inaccurate.

Wellcome said it was “deeply concerned” by the messages.

“It was claimed that a customer was diagnosed with Hepatitis A after consuming China blueberries purchased from our supermarket.

“The company would like to clarify it does not carry any blueberries produced in China. All the fresh blueberries for sale at Wellcome are produced in Chile.”

The Dairy Farm International subsidiary said it had not received any complaints from customers experiencing discomfort after consuming blueberries.

“Should customers have any questions regarding products they have bought at Wellcome, they may visit any of our stores with the purchased goods and receipt for an exchange or refund.”
