Aditya Birla makes More with Total

Aditya Birla Retail, which owns nearly 500 More-branded supermarkets and hypermarkets across India, is to buy the rival superstore business Jubilant Agri and Consumer Products.

The deal will add four Total Superstore hypermarkets to its network, along with brand, warehouse and supply chain facilities.

“The acquisition of Total is a good strategic fit for ABRL in terms of its store locations and catchment areas,” said Pranab Barua, business director, apparel & retail business, of Aditya Birla Group.

In line with the approved transaction, ABRL will acquire in an all cash deal, the leasehold rights for the hypermarkets in Bangalore along with movable and immovable assets, a warehouse, an office premise, working capital, trademarks, intellectual property and other rights.

The Total Superstore business has an aggregate retail footprint of 280,000 sqft.

The transaction is subject to the approval of shareholders of JACL and Jubilant Industries, along with necessary regulatory approvals.

Aditya Birla Retail’s More boasts the second largest supermarket network in India with a total floor space of 2 million sqft across India.

The company posted sales of Rs 25,110,000,000 (US$391 million) last financial year.
