Thai fashion brands conquer Hong Kong

Nearly 50 Thai fashion entrepreneurs have reported winning significant orders following their appearance at this year’s Hong Kong Spring/Summer Fashion Week.
Joining together in a promotion by the Thai Government’s Department of Industrial Promotion, 47 brands displayed goods at the event, securing more than 10 million Thai baht in orders – about HK$2.2 million.
The Thai businesses are almost entirely small or medium enterprises, and include fashion labels Monique, Ta Tha Ta, Ruchitta, Idyllic, Label 31, Adhoc, Al’Manita, Jaritt, Iames, Freak Out and The Sun Chic, specialising in textile, clothing, leather and shoes.
The project aims at scaling up Thailand’s fashion industry image to build its reputation in the Asia region.
According to the Department of Industrial Promotion, the total export value of Thai fashion products from January to March this year was worth 160,000 million baht, (HK$35 million), excluding purchase made by tourists, cross-border trade and foreign middlemen.
Ekapot Panunan, who owns MNQ Corporation and the Monique brand and specialises in leather bag products, says his creations are focused on the online market and exported only to Singapore. But participation in the Fashion Week has brought new clients from China, Hong Kong and Dubai. He also gained ideas on leather bag fashion trend at the event.
Athit Wuthikaro, director general of the Department of Industrial Promotion, sees high growth potential for the Thai fashion industry thanks to the abundance of raw materials, variety of product designs, different fashion quarters and its location as a logistics center of ASEAN.
He also says that after a discussion with Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), Thai fashion SMEs have been encouraged to join over 30 international events organised by the Council.
