Bass Pro culls staff

Bass Pro Shops – the US boating, fishing, camping, hunting and outdoor category killer – has confirmed a cull in store and head office staff.

But the company says the move will not expand further. The cuts were designed to keep administration “lean” in store and at head office level. It retains a workforce of 22,000 overall.

Fewer than 60 jobs were cut at its Springfield headquarters and a woodworking factory in Nixa.

VP of HR at Bass pro Shops, Paul Shore, said an average of six staff were laid off at most of its 70 stores in the US and Canada.

“Keep in mind in the Ozarks area we employ about 5800 people and we’ve added 2300 positions in the Ozarks in the last three years,” Shore told the Springfield News Leader newspaper.

“This was just something we needed to do to be more efficient and lean and to continue to be a healthy company.”

Bass Pro plans to open eight new stores this year. One of its most recent openings was inside the Memphis Pyramid, a former sports arena and concert venue in Memphis, Tennessee, early this year. At 535,000 sqft, The Pyramid store is the company’s largest yet. In addition to the retail store itself, the building houses two restaurants, a bowling alley, a 100-room hotel, an observation deck, and the tallest free-standing elevator in America.
