Tesco axes Wine Club as it starts to cull range

Embattled UK supermarket giant Tesco is to close down its Wine Community in another cost-cutting move.

The online club for wine enthusiasts was created to boost the retailer’s credibility as a wine merchant.

But that credibility seems set to take a hit with wine reportedly one of the categories in which it plans to cull its product range.

“We have taken the decision to close our Wine Community website,” a spokesperson for Tesco said in a statement.

“We know the site has proved really informative for some customers, but we will now focus on providing information on our award-winning wine range in store and on our Tesco.com website.”

Tesco launched its Wine Community website in December 2011. It will close this week on August 28. It features recommendations and columns by foodies and wine aficionados and was billed as “a place for people to come together to discuss and share their thoughts, opinions and experiences about wine”. And, of course, to sell wine.
