US fast food chain Burger King looks set to exit Hong Kong – for the second time.
According to reports from Chinese news agency Xinhua, Burger King Hong Kong has closed fast food restaurants in Wan Chai, Tsim Sha Tsui, Yau Ma Tei, Wong Tai Sin and Tseung Kwan O.
The only outlets still operating are at The Peak and airside inside Hong Kong International Airport.
Xinhua says Hong Kong’s Labour Department has received enquiries from affected workers and that the local franchise holder Perfect Combo has been taken to court to recover unpaid rent totalling as much as HK$8 million. (US$1.03 million).
Burger King made its first foray into Hong Kong in the 1980s, but closed its outlets a decade later. The brand returned in 2003 opening its first restaurant at HKIA.
