JD.com broadens ties with DHL

China’s largest online direct-sales company JD.com has signed an agreement of co-operation with logistics company DHL on a range of cross-border supply-chain initiatives.
This follows the announcement in July that DHL would be the preferred delivery platform for American products ordered by Chinese buyers on JD.com’s US Mall.
Under the new agreement, DHL will become the preferred logistics supplier to JD.com’s International Business Group, which focuses on consumers in markets outside of China. This will make the sales company a strategic customer under DHL’s Fast Growing Enterprises initiative, giving it access to a suite of logistics services. DHL will provide international express delivery; air, ocean and road freight; warehousing; parcel delivery; eCommerce service and access to fulfillment centres as well as local distribution services in key regions.
DHL is also providing international express services between China and France.
As well, the two companies will explore the development of innovative cross-border eCommerce supply-chain systems and processes with the aim of establishing bilateral commercial agreements to their mutual benefit.
“Supporting the evolving needs of China’s online consumers will require in-depth knowledge of international transport, warehousing and distribution,” says DHL Express China CEO Wu Dongming.
“DHL is well-positioned to address this with its leading-edge facilities and expansive global infrastructure, which includes 11 gateways in China covering major trading hubs and inter-city connections.
“We are also present in more than 220 countries and territories, and supported by more than 325,000 employees.”
He says DHL has had 30 years of industry experience in China.
“JD.com is setting the global standard for eCommerce experience with a reputation for delivering products at amazingly fast speeds,” says JD.com’s International Business Group president Victor Xu. “The expansion of our partnerships with DHL will ensure we continue to strengthen our high standards of efficiency and convenience, even as we quickly scale up our cross-border eCommerce services.”
