Nordstrom confirms Manhattan flagship

It’s taken a whole four years – and will take another three before it opens – but Manhattan, New York City, is finally getting its first full-line Nordstrom department store.

Some four years after it first mooted the idea, the US retailer has confirmed a 363,000 sqft store will open on Columbus Circle in midtown in 2019.

It will be spread over four properties along Broadway, between West 57th and West 58th Sts. Part of the store will be located inside the base of the Central Park Tower under development by Extell Development Co.

Nordstrom says the exterior of the store will be designed by James Carpenter Design Associates and will feature “unique seven-level glass waveforms facades”.

While Nordstrom has full-line clothing stores in New Jersey and Long Island, and a Nordstrom Rack outlet store in Manhattan, the company has always been discouraged from opening a full line store in the area, by notoriously high rents.

The company has not revealed the cost of the new store, although it does have a US$1.1 billion budgeted for five years from 2014 to 2019 earmarked for both the Manhattan project and expansion into Canada.

Nordstrom has 121 full-line stores in the US and Canada and 194 Nordstrom Racks. It plans 300 Racks by 2020.
