Hong Kong tourism gets budget boost

Hong Kong tourism received a big boost in yesterday’s budget – which should produce a positive spin-off for retailers.
The government announced an additional $200 million in funding to step up marketing by the Hong Kong Tourism Board.
Dr Peter Lam, the board’s chairman, said he welcomed the additional funding for the 2016-17 Budget
“We appreciate the support from the government on tourism promotion. The HKTB plans to use the additional funding to elevate the marketing initiatives stated in our proposed 2016-17 work plan. We will also cooperate with travel and related trade in driving further development of the industry.”
Lam said the board planned to discuss with the government and devise related work plan to cover the items as stated in the 2016-17 Budget, such as:

  • Expand the scale of major events and related promotion;
  • Re-package Hong Kong’s tourism image and step up promotion of Quality & Honest Hong Kong Tours in the Mainland;
  • Assist the industry to open up new visitor sources; and
  • Continue to promote Hong Kong’s natural scenery as well as our unique history and culture.

“ Details of these plans will be released in due course,” Lam concluded.
