KidZania Singapore opens on Sentosa

Mexico-based KidZania Singapore has opened its first play-and-learn outlet – the 23rd in the world and the fifth in Southeast Asia after Bangkok, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur and Manila.

Founder and president Xavier Lopez Ancona has described Singapore as being strategically important for the company.

On Sentosa Island, the centre is aimed at attracting both locals and tourists, and act as a showcase for the region, and Acona says he expects it to attract 500,000 visitors a year.

Covering 7600 sqm, the centre replicates a town, with stores and attractions set up by 37 industry partners, including such brands as 7-Eleven, Johnson & Johnson, KFC and Qatar Airways, as well as local chain restaurants and hospitals.

Inside, its young visitors use “KidZos”, KidZania’s official currency, to pay for items and services. They can also earn the virtual currency by participating in role-playing activities featuring such occupations as banker, chef, doctor, journalist or radio DJ.

With an emphasis on encouraging children to make their own choices and be creative, KidZania allows parents to accompany children, but not within the activity spaces that feature job experiences and day-to-day activities.
KidZania plans further expansion into Asia by setting up outlets in Busan and New Delhi this year.

Meanwhile, digital edutainment company Mosh! has opened in the same building as KidZania Singapore. It features immersive experiences using multi-media interactivity and digital technology.
