Alibaba appliance ban imposed

Fourteen types of small home appliances have been banned from sale on sites run by Chinese eCommerce giant Alibaba.
The Alibaba appliance ban follows complaints about quality of the items from customers of shopping platforms Taobao and Tmall.
Included on the list are electric boilers, electromagnetic ovens and rice cookers, as well as eight domestic brands, including Peskoe and Royalstar.
Alibaba says customer complaints about the products were far higher than average, as shown by trading data. “Substandard home appliances can lead to safety hazards. We hope the manufacturers will improve their quality.”
Electric boilers from the eight brands generated about 70 million yuan (US$10.75 million) in sales via Alibaba last year.
This is the first large-scale expulsion from Alibaba’s eCommerce platforms, but last year it banned Wonderflower, a copycat home appliance brand, after customer complaints.
