Ong Shunmugam opening first flagship

Singapore fashion label Ong Shunmugam will move into its first flagship store in the Chip Bee Gardens neighbourhood next month — a relocation from its atelier in Hong Leong Building, where it has been based for four years.

After burgeoning into an international brand, the multi-award-winning womenswear label has outgrown its original space.

With its new 1300 sqft (120 sqm) retail space off Holland Village, the label will have as neighbours Monocle Singapore Bureau and design consultancy HJgher.

Founded by designer Priscilla Shunmugam, the label launched its first ready-to-wear collection in December 2010. Retailing originally through its online store or by appointment, the label opened its first permanent shop space, Atelier Ong Shunmugam, in Raffles Place in November 2011.

In March 2012, the label collaborated with the National Museum of Singapore for the In The Mood for Cheongsam exhibition – the first womenswear label to retail at the museum.

Ong Shunmugam was one of only two Singapore labels chosen by the platform Future Fashion Now to show its spring/summer collection at Paris Fashion Week in 2012. The same year it was awarded Breakthrough Local Label by Cleo Magazine Singapore at its fashion awards, and Priscilla Shunmugam was named Designer of the Year at the 2012 Elle Awards in Singapore.

In December 2013, Shunmugam won the Grand Award at the Design for Asia Awards, and the following year was one of five Singaporean labels offered a solo show at the Audi Fashion Festival.
