Thai authorities seize fake fashion

Thousands of fake label fashion label goods have been seized from retail stores in a Thai government clampdown.

In three separate recent raids, the Thai Department of Special Investigations (DSI) has reportedly taken about 80,000 items of clothing from stores and arrested people suspected of being involved in the counterfeit fashion trade.

In the largest raid of a fourth floor shop at the famous Platinum Pratunam fashion mall and its associated warehouse on Soi Charoenrat Soi 7, 73,000 items of fake labelled sports clothing was seized including goods bearing brands Adidas, Nike and Tommy, and unlicensed Liverpool and Buriram (a local football team) shirts with an estimated worth of 8 million THB (US$230,000).

At an earlier raid of the 168 Jeans shop in the Bo Bae market, and its related storage site, about 3000 items of fake designer jeans, branded Levis, Wrangler, Mac and Nudie, among others, were taken and the store’s owner was arrested.

And at the notorious MBK shopping mall in central Bangkok, some 1500 items were taken after two shops were raided. Goods seized were branded Adidas, Armani, Diesel, Versace, Polo, Tommy and Gucci, among others. Two people were arrested.

Local media Thairath reports the increasingly frequent raids are being carried out to assuage IS concerns about the proliferation of fake fashion label goods in Thailand

“The government is keen to free itself from trade sanctions imposed over the trade in fake goods,” Thairath reported..

People arrested for trading in fake fashion label goods face up to four years in jail or fines of 400,000 THB ($12,000) or both.
